FAQ

When does the BHBL start?

  • The BHBL operates two seasons each year: winter and spring. The winter season's registration opens in September, with games between December and March. The spring season's registration begins in March, and games are scheduled for April to May.

I am trying to register my returning players, but the system does not recognize them. What do you think I should do?

  • Occasionally, there may be technical issues recognizing returning players. In such cases, you can register your child as a new player. Although it may take longer, it won't affect your child's participation once the registration process is complete.

I am having issues trying to register. Could you let me know why my application process won't go through?

  • BHBL accepts Visa and MasterCard for registration. If you're using one of these cards and still encountering problems, it's recommended to use web browsers like Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, as they tend to work best for the registration process.

Can I call an office to talk to someone from the BHBL?

  • Volunteer parents manage the BHBL, and there is no physical office or telephone support. So that you know, all communication is handled through email. To get in touch, please email the appropriate division director, specifying your child's grade and name in your email.

My child has never played basketball before. Is this okay?

  • Absolutely! Prior basketball experience is not a requirement for joining the BHBL. The Booster and Rookies divisions focus on participation and enjoyment rather than perfect basketball skills. BHBL games are supervised by dedicated volunteer officials and coaches who ensure a fun experience for all players, regardless of their skill level.

Does every player need to be rated?

  • No, not all players need to go through the rating process. Ratings from previous seasons are often used, and some players may be fine without attending the rating sessions. Division directors may contact coaches for ratings, sparing certain players from attending rating sessions.

I registered my child for Booster or Rookies and forgot to request friends on the application. What do you think I should do?

  • If you forgot to add friend requests during registration, contact the division directly via email to have your requests noted on your application. Include the names and grades of the players you want to have on the same team. While BHBL tries to honor these requests in the Booster and Rookies divisions, they cannot guarantee they will always be accommodated.

Does BHBL use a child’s age or grade level for team formation?

  • BHBL uses grade level for team formation across all divisions. This approach ensures that classmates can play together, fostering community within the league.

Sometimes, the schedule changes. Why does this happen?

  • BHBL collaborates with the City of Beverly Hills and the Beverly Hills Unified School District. Gym availability can take some effort to secure. Occasionally, games, such as CIF games, may be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances. BHBL strives to communicate any schedule changes as soon as possible.

Where are the BHBL games played?

  • All BHBL games are held at Beverly Hills High School, 241 Moreno Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90212. In rare cases, alternate sites may be used due to emergencies.

If I missed registration, can I be added to the waitlist?

  • BHBL typically closes registration before the end date due to high demand. If registration is completed, the waitlist is also turned off. However, you can just email the division you're interested in to ask if there's any availability or to keep your email on file in case the waitlist opens up.

When do I find out if I am moved off the waitlist onto a team?

  • Waitlisted players will be notified if they have been placed on a team after the draft or team formation. If not initially placed on a team, players can remain on the waitlist if spots become available. Players not placed on teams will receive a full refund.

Can I hold a practice at my home?

  • BHBL does not permit team practices at private residences. All courses must be held at approved locations, including Beverly Hills School sites and Roxbury Park.

Can I hold my practice inside the gym at the high school?

  • BHBL does not have access to indoor practices at the high school gym. The league determines practice times and locations.

Can I be traded if I do not join the team I like?

  • In the Minor to Super Senior divisions, team formation is done through coach selection, and requests are not considered. In the Booster and Rookies divisions, submissions are accepted but not guaranteed. BHBL accommodates requests to the best of its ability, but sometimes, they cannot be honored.

Can I request certain practice days?

  • BHBL does not accept requests for specific practice days. Team practice schedules are determined through drafts, with coaches selecting their practice days. Practices usually start before 4:00 p.m., as the courts have no lights.

When do we receive our team supplies?

  • Distribution of team supplies is based on availability, and BHBL communicates distribution plans as the season start date approaches.

Do Booster teams have weekly practices?

  • There is a 10-minute practice in the Booster division at the beginning of the 50-minute game slot, time permitting. They do not have dedicated practice time.

I missed the Coaching Certification (PSA) Clinic, what should I do?

If you missed the PCA (Positive Coaching Alliance) coach certification clinic, an alternative option is available. You can complete the PCA Double-Goal Coaching certification online. This online certification program, "Double-Goal Coach®: Coaching for Winning and Life Lessons," allows you to acquire the necessary coaching knowledge and skills.

BHBL may also provide a voucher code for this online training, but it may take some time for them to obtain it. Could you check your email for any communication from BHBL regarding the voucher code or the online certification process?
